Animal Care and Safety
Animal-based research comes with the responsibility to provide animals with the highest level of ethical and humane care, and the OR offers support in a myriad of ways.
Ethics and Compliance
The OR can help researchers navigate the complex guidelines and and requirements of ethics, safety, responsibility, as well as regulations by funders and government.

Research integrity and misconduct are managed under the Office of Research, with the Vice President for Research serving as WSU’s research integrity officer.

Managing and sharing research data is a key part of the research process. WSU and the Office of Research offer an array of support and resources.

Generative AI
Generative AI (GAI) holds significant potential for advancing research and scholarship across various disciplines. WSU’s guidance for GAI is designed to assist members of the WSU research community in employing GAI tools ethically and responsibly and with full transparency.

Advancement and Strategy
The Advancement and Strategy team provides support for research initiatives and infrastructure; stimulates faculty collaborations; creates a culture of productive grant writing; and increases funding success by assisting with the development of grant proposals. The team works closely with faculty, government relations and external stakeholders to advance the research enterprise and support the full range of research and creative activities systemwide. They also oversee Office of Research supported Centers, providing fiscal support and management.
Support and Operations
The Support and Operations team reviews and submits grant proposals, leads award and non-monetary agreement negotiations and related compliance, provides training, and oversees data reporting operations. Additionally, they provide support for Office of Research activities related to the ONEWSU. The team offers tools to guide faculty through administrative processes and keeps researchers informed about federal, state, funder-specific, and WSU policies and guidelines governing research conduct.
Assurances
The Assurances team, part of the Support and Operations team, supports and promotes safe, secure, and ethical research practices at WSU. They help manage the University’s research compliance and integrity programs and administer the Presidential committees that oversee research with animals, biological agents, humans, and radiation. They also provide hazardous materials shipping services, administer the export control program, and help promote research security.
Campus Veterinarian
The Campus Veterinarian team oversees the health and welfare of animals used at WSU and administers high-level care to animals across the WSU system. They provide a complete range of services including veterinary care, vivarium services, training and research, and safety support while assuring compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines for laboratory animal care.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The Innovation and Entrepreneurship team supports faculty and student efforts to translate research discoveries into innovations ready for the marketplace. They are responsible for the evaluation, protection, and commercialization of innovations and discoveries for the expansion of WSU’s public impact. They facilitate productive collaborations based on WSU intellectual property by bridging the gap between the researchers, their discoveries, and industry partners or start-ups.
