Six to eight faculty members were selected to represent different aspects of focused research strengths for each mission. These faculty, who have a demonstrated record as team players, accompanied the Vice President for Research to Washington, D.C.and New York city. These researchers visited selected program directors at federal agencies and private foundations.

The program began in 2002-03 when five Missions to D.C. took place. Washington, D.C. is home to program directors at federal agencies.

Program directors at private foundations that support the liberal arts are located in New York. The Mission to NY occurred in 2006.
