Enhancing Student Opportunity, Experience, and
Success
Dr. Paul E. Pitre’s research explores the factors that contribute to academic achievement among students of racial/ethnic minority and low-income backgrounds—populations of significant concern because of their persistent educational struggles. By examining student learning goals, non-cognitive variables, and other key indicators, including school and community contexts, Dr. Pitre is working to develop models that can be replicated to enhance academic achievement, satisfaction, and overall success. He also works to design policy and program solutions that can be implemented, assessed, and cultivated to improve student performance nationwide.
Key areas of concern to Dr. Pitre include (1) factors related to academic success and persistence by students in preschool through high school, (2) models of academic accomplishment for students of racial/ethnic minority and low-socioeconomic status backgrounds, and (3) the role of policy for preschool through post-secondary education in enhancing student achievement and satisfaction. A goal of his research is to identify methods for collaborative partnerships between state agencies and their governing bodies for greater student success.
Dr. Pitre is currently studying state-level policies aimed at enhancing student high school/college transitions and their effectiveness. His research interests also include the evolving role of the Community College Model in post-secondary education and in the new global economy. This broadened research scope includes international comparative education and issues of educational planning and access in countries working to expand and improve their educational systems.
