Assisting Adolescent Cancer Survivors as they Transition into Adulthood

How can psychologists, counselors and educators facilitate the lifelong adjustment and success of adolescents with chronic illness such as cancer? Dr. Bauman’s curiosity about this question originated from her experience with her son’s diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and his successful treatment and follow-up. Subsequently, in collaboration with Patient Services of the Washington/Alaska Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Dr. Bauman has advanced school professionals’ knowledge of the growing body of research on the psychosocial and academic obstacles that may result from childhood cancer and its treatment.

Dr. Bauman’s emerging line of research strives to understand the full range of outcomes including posttraumatic growth in adolescents following childhood cancer treatment. She is interested in the cognitive process by which many survivors positively interpret and find meaning in the childhood cancer experience. In addition, she plans to ascertain whether a cognitive-behavioral problem-solving framework can assist adolescent survivors as they transition into young adulthood and increasingly make decisions regarding health and wellness, higher education and career, and personal and social concerns. These foci build on Dr. Bauman’s previous scholarship in risk and resiliency, and on her clinical experience at university counseling centers. Moreover, these lines of inquiry are consistent with recommendations that psychologists use competency-based models to develop specific interventions that build on survivors’ strengths. Dr. Bauman’s background in multicultural counseling will help her to advance knowledge about the diverse experiences of adolescents with chronic illness and contribute to the development of innovative formats for the delivery of community-based care.

Dr. Stephanie San Miguel Bauman is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling Psychology at Washington State University Tri-Cities. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of California Santa Barbara, and a B.A. in Psychology and English from the University of Notre Dame. Prior to joining the faculty of WSU, Dr. Bauman was on the senior staff of the University of Virginia Counseling Center. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Center for Cancer Prevention Research at Washington State University. Dr. Bauman is the recipient of a WSU College of Education Faculty Excellence Award, and of a University of Notre Dame Exemplary Asian Pacific Alumna Award.
