SUMMARY:ORAP Grant Proposal Writing Course
DESCRIPTION:Date: Class begins on Wednesday\, May 18th \nLocation: TBD \nThe Office of Research Advancement and Partnerships (ORAP) now offers a grant writing course applicable for NIH\, NSF\, and other agencies.  The course is offered at no cost\, but enrollment is limited. \nOur goal is to enable you to write more effective grant proposals in far less time – and enjoy the process! \nThe outcome is to promote your career\, to provide funding for significant and impactful research\, and to further promote international recognition for WSU as an education and research institution. \nThe course is scheduled to run 7-8 weeks.  Included are lectures\, a discussion forum\, and individual consultations.  You can expect that course work will require 4 to 6 hours each week – working on YOUR grant proposal.  It is intended for young and established investigators at all WSU campuses \nORAP GRANT WRITING COURSE \nThe Office of Research Advancement and Partnerships (ORAP) now offers a grant writing course targeted towards NIH\, NSF\, and other agencies \nThe course is offered at no cost\, but enrollment is limited \nOUR GOAL IS TO ENABLE YOU TO WRITE MORE EFFECTIVE  \nGRANT PROPOSALS IN FAR LESS TIME – AND HAVE FUN DOING IT! \nThe outcome is to advance your career\, to obtain funding for significant and impactful research\, and to further promote international recognition for WSU as an education and research institution. \nFrom Robert Finney (PhD) (Instructor):  “I have been teaching grantsmanship using this format for a number of years.  I have taught both MDs and PhD scientists\, including young and established investigators.  The results have been transformative for many researchers.  It has not only enabled researchers to be more effective at attaining grant awards (even those with a long dry-spell in grant funding and less-than-stellar publication records)\, but also more efficient.  And yes\, it has even made grant writing an intellectually fun part of doing research.  My experience is that simply reading grant writing books (even the few good ones out there) is not sufficient to fully embrace grantsmanship – to make grant writing work for you.  It requires hands-on guidance.” \nABOUT THE COURSE \nThe course is scheduled to run 7-8 weeks. \nYou can expect that course work will require 4 to 6 hours each week – working on YOUR grant proposal. \nIt is intended for young and established investigators at all WSU campuses. \n\nOn line presentations on grantsmanship: Knowing how to properly frame a grant proposal will enable you to know whether or not you truly have a “good” AKA “fundable” idea and how to communicate your project efficiently and effectively to reviewers.\nPresentation/discussion sessions (2 hrs. per week): The purpose is to answer specific questions you may have about your grant application and to demonstrate/implement analytical and writing concepts of the course.\nForum submissions and forum analyses of colleague submissions: The focus will be on developing your summary/specific aims page\, since it is the most important page of your grant application and since it will ultimately direct the content for the remainder of the proposal.\nOne on One consultation (typically two per session\, or as required): The purpose is to answer specific questions you may have\, to analyze your work in progress\, and to arrive at a spectacular grant application.\nHalf day workshop/s: One or two of these (TBD by the group). Here\, we will conduct mock review sessions.  You will be asked to be primary reviewer on two proposals (summary/specific aims page review only) and you will be asked to score and critique submissions.\nFollow up: You will also have additional support from ORAP including development and technical writing expertise.\n\nENROLLMENT \nSummer\, 2016                                                                        \nWe realize that this is a commitment of time but it is important for everyone involved that you enroll ONLY if you are able to commit to it.  Missing a week or so can be accommodated (it is summer!)\, but please put full effort in for at least 6 of the 8 weeks. \nThe next course starts May 18\, 2016.  \nIf you would like to be enrolled\, please email your name\, department\, and WSU ID# to Emily Brashear at Emily.brashear@wsu.edu.
