SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Dr. Anthony Boccanfuso
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Research invites the University community to a seminar featuring Dr. Anthony Boccanfuso\, President of the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP). His talk\, “Why University Industry Partnerships Matter\,” will take place on Thursday\, May 31\, at 3 p.m.\, in FSHN T101. \nBasic research\, much of which emanates from the world’s outstanding academic laboratories\, is the foundation for the innovation that has created the new therapies\, materials\, and processes that benefit humankind and generate wealth for companies that successfully translate discoveries to commercial success. This is not a linear\, one-way process; optimizing the process of discovery to innovation demands dynamic and multifaceted approaches to teaming at the university-industry interface. This presentation will explore some contemporary issues\, new approaches and some trends impacting industry-academic engagement including: \n\nThe Partnership Continuum – what are the myriad of ways to collaborate\nMetrics – How to measure the return on investment in these collaborations\nNew Models – what universities are doing to advance collaborations\nCo-creation – the ability to garner other sponsors for U-I collaborations\n\nDr. Boccanfuso has had a distinguished career in the research management and science policy arenas and has held a variety of positions at several universities\, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. He is also chair of the MedStar Health Research Institute. \nFor any questions please contact Sara Mahaffy at sarah.mahaffy@wsu.edu.

SUMMARY:Community Health Partnerships Workshop - Register by 4/3
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of the Health Equity Research Collaborative (HERC)\, a WSU Grand Challenge funded initiative. The initiative involves faculty from multiple colleges who have an interest in understanding the factors that promote health resilience and decrease health risks associated with poverty\, discrimination\, and poor access to healthcare. \nThe workshop is free and open to all WSU faculty and graduate students\, and aims to facilitate partnership-building between the university and community-based organizations. Space is limited so please register by April 3rd. \nRegister Now\n \nRepresentatives from six relevant organizations will present ideas for research collaborations and extramurally funded projects that could significantly increase their abilities to fulfill their healthcare missions. \nAttending are representatives from: \n• The Native Project\n• Spokane Regional Health District\n• Better Health Together\n• Yakima County Health District\n• Pullman Regional Hospital\n• Washington State Department of Health \nAdditional breakout sessions on nutrition\, stress & health\, and community-based intervention research will allow participants to discuss specific ideas for projects related to areas of WSU strength. Seed grants will be made available to launch promising projects. \nLunch will be provided at this free event. \nFor more information about HERC and the workshop please contact Paul Whitney pwhitney@wsu.edu. \n

SUMMARY:Many Threads: A Walk Through the Science of Integration
DESCRIPTION:Many of our most tenacious challenges in energy\, food and water are constrained by the mismatch between messy real world interactions and siloed disciplinary approaches. However\, talking about a science of integration and actually doing it requires precision in concepts\, methodologies and implementation. \nIn this lecture\, Lilian Alessa\, Ph.D. will offer some examples of the leading edges of integrative science and explore the possibilities for application through regional and national research leadership navigating the new resilient integrated energy landscape. Dr. Alessa is President’s Professor and director of the Center for Resilient Communities at the University of Idaho. She conducts extensive research on human adaptation to environmental change\, funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security\, including Community Based Observing Systems and Networks (CBONS) for improved situational awareness and integrated food\, energy and water projects. \nDr. Alessa’s expertise is in social-ecological and technological systems (SETS) science and the development of highly integrated approaches to better understanding complex environmental processes\, particularly through the incorporation of place-based knowledge. \nA reception will follow the lecture at 3:30 p.m. If you have any questions\, please contact Sandy Watson at sfwatson@wsu.edu. \nMeet Dr. Alessa\nPrior to joining University of Idaho\, Dr. Alessa was the Director of the Alaska Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) at the University of Alaska. She is the Community Based Observing Networks and Systems (CBONS) Program Lead and International Liaison for the Arctic Domain Awareness Center (ADAC)\, a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. \nTrained as both a physical and social scientist she pioneered human sensor networks (CBONS) and developed the only Arctic freshwater security assessment index. At the U of Idaho she established the Center for Resilient Communities (CRC)\, a multi-Institutional partnership focused on helping communities thrive in rapidly changing environments. She received her PhDs from the University of British Columbia and sits on several national advisory committees including the National Ecological Observing Network (NEON). She is a co-author of the NSF Decadal Vision “America’s Future: Environmental Research and Education for a Thriving Century http://www.nsf.gov/geo/ere/ereweb/ac-ere/ac-ere_thriving_century.pdf. \nDuring the U.S. Chairmanship of the Arctic Council\, Dr. Alessa serves as Project Lead for Arctic freshwater security assessments and chairs the Arctic Adaptation Exchange Portal (AAEP)\, arcticadaptationexchange.com. Her team’s other work includes developing innovative training programs to off-set technology induced vulnerabilities in combat forces\, as well as providing guidelines on designing and securing resilient landscapes using social\, ecological and technological systems science. \n
