SUMMARY:VPR Distinguished Lecture: "Accelerating Scientific Discovery through QIS"
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Research will kick off the 2019-2020 Vice President for Research Distinguished Lecture Series with a talk by Nathan Baker\, director for the Advanced Computing\, Mathematics\, and Data Division at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). \nThe talk is titled “Accelerating Scientific Discovery through Quantum Information Sciences.” A reception will follow in ETRL\, room 119. \nQuantum information science (QIS) is an emerging field with an immense potential to revolutionize various science and engineering applications involving quantum computing\, communication\, and quantum simulation. The talk will provide an overview of the QIS area\, including its key applications\, challenges\, and opportunities\, as well as key quantum related activities happening at PNNL. \nBaker’s research focuses on developing new algorithms and mathematical methods in biophysics\, nanotechnology\, and informatics. His research projects include computational methods for modeling solvation in biomolecular systems\, mathematical methods for mesoscale materials modeling\, and development of methods for signature discovery. Baker has received funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)\, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)\, and the National Science Foundation (NSF). \nHe has served as co-principal investigator and project manager for the DOE Advanced Scientific Computing Research CM4: Collaboratory on Mathematics for Mesoscopic Modeling of Materials and as lead for the Signature Discovery Initiative at PNNL. Baker served on review panels for various agencies\, including as a member of the NIH Macromolecular Structure and Function D study section. Baker currently is an editorial board member for Biophysical Journal and serves on the editorial board for NPG Scientific Data. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. \nBaker is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also received the Hewlett-Packard Junior Faculty Excellence Award by the American Chemical Society\, the National Cancer Institute caBIG Connecting Collaborators Award\, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship. He earned his doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of California\, San Diego. \nThe Vice President for Research Distinguished Lecture Series invites world-renowned experts to WSU to share ideas and spark conversations about research that addresses society’s biggest challenges. Invited lecturers are leaders in their fields. This Vice President for Research Distinguished Lecture is sponsored by the Office of Research. \nFor questions\, contact Geeta Dutta by email at geeta.dutta@wsu.edu or by phone at (509) 335-5980 or contact Ananth Kalyanaraman by email at ananth@wsu.edu or by phone at (509) 335-6760.

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Dr. Anthony Boccanfuso
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Research invites the University community to a seminar featuring Dr. Anthony Boccanfuso\, President of the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP). His talk\, “Why University Industry Partnerships Matter\,” will take place on Thursday\, May 31\, at 3 p.m.\, in FSHN T101. \nBasic research\, much of which emanates from the world’s outstanding academic laboratories\, is the foundation for the innovation that has created the new therapies\, materials\, and processes that benefit humankind and generate wealth for companies that successfully translate discoveries to commercial success. This is not a linear\, one-way process; optimizing the process of discovery to innovation demands dynamic and multifaceted approaches to teaming at the university-industry interface. This presentation will explore some contemporary issues\, new approaches and some trends impacting industry-academic engagement including: \n\nThe Partnership Continuum – what are the myriad of ways to collaborate\nMetrics – How to measure the return on investment in these collaborations\nNew Models – what universities are doing to advance collaborations\nCo-creation – the ability to garner other sponsors for U-I collaborations\n\nDr. Boccanfuso has had a distinguished career in the research management and science policy arenas and has held a variety of positions at several universities\, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. He is also chair of the MedStar Health Research Institute. \nFor any questions please contact Sara Mahaffy at sarah.mahaffy@wsu.edu.
