WSU partnered with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the University of Washington, and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to host the SciTech Northwest 2018 expo in Seattle. The event showcased more than 40 new technologies from Washington’s top research institutions that are ready or nearly ready for commercialization.

The Office of Research presented awards to eight faculty members for their outstanding achievements in research as part of the opening ceremony for WSU Research Week 2018.
“Our outstanding individual faculty and staff are the “bedrock” of the creative activity, research and scholarship enterprise,” said Chris Keane, vice president for research. “It’s very important to take time to recognize the achievements of our individual outstanding faculty and staff, whether in research, service to the Office of Research, leadership of major efforts, or other activities.”

Dan Nordquist has been appointed as deputy vice president for research (VPR) for operations. Nordquist previously served as associate vice president for the Office of Research Support and Operations (ORSO) unit. In his new role, Dan will work with all Office of Research (OR) units to improve operational support of the research community. He will also continue to oversee ORSO, the Office of Research Information Technology unit, and the Conflict of Interest Committee.

Applications are now open for the WSU i-Corps program, which teaches scientists and engineers the entrepreneurship and business skills needed to move their academic research to the marketplace.
Over the course of nine weeks, I-Corps provides both training and funding for teams to engage in a process of understanding how their solution fits in the marketplace. The effort serves to sharpen the focus of development efforts and improves the prospects of attracting funding.

Cascade Herriot, Information Systems Coordinator for the Office of Commercialization, has been elected as a committee member into the Global Users Group for the Intellectual property management software, Inteum. This committee exists to voice the concerns of universities, companies , and other stakeholders around the world to Inteum, and help guide Inteum in how they can better meet the needs of their users. The committee will meet quarterly, and will have exclusive access to beta releases of new functionality for feedback.
Submissions for Commercialization Gap Fund Awards Now Open
The Office of Commercialization has officially opened submissions for the 2018-19 Commercialization Gap Fund (CGF) awards. This program awards up to $50,000 to WSU researchers that demonstrate how their work will make an economic impact on our society.

In April, the Office of Research held its inaugural WSU Multidisciplinary Research FlashTalks, a series of brief and lively presentations by newly hired WSU faculty. Hired as part of the Strategic Research Investment initiatives, these new researchers are working in disciplines ranging from health disparities to functional genomics.
