This program will support the pursuit of research ideas and projects that lead to extramural funding or achievements in scholarly or creative practice as recognized by your field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up to two awardees will receive $10,000 and funding for a graduate student research assistantship <strong>for one-semester<\/strong>. See <a href=\"#award-details\">Award Details<\/a> below for information on the funding level for the research assistant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award will be made through a competitive proposal process, which will consist of a written application followed by a short public presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Submission Deadline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The application period for 2025 RA &amp; $10k awards is September 10, 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application Components<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All components of the application will be entered directly or, as noted, submitted as an attachment in the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.wsu.edu\/advancement\/funding\/internal\/ra-10k\/application\/\">online application form<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Research Question\/Project Overview<\/strong> (800 words) \u2014 Define the major research question or topic to be addressed by the project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Significance\/Impact <\/strong>(500 words) \u2014 Describe the project\u2019s positive impact on the discipline, to a specific community\/ies, and\/or to the public or a sector of the public. Please be specific and provide examples as necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Innovation, Collaboration or Adaptation<\/strong> (500 words) \u2014 Identify any new methods, approaches, strategic collaborations, inventive or adaptive elements of the research project. Describe how the project is unique within the field or extends on growing, impactful research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scope of Work <\/strong>(500 words) \u2014 Describe the approach, tasks, timeline, activities, and expected outcomes for the project. Include any special facilities, equipment, partnerships, or other resources that will be used for the project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RA Involvement <\/strong>(300 words) \u2014 Describe the specific training and research opportunities that will be provided to the RA funded under the proposed project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Biographical Sketch or CV <\/strong>(attachment; 2 pages per PI) \u2014 Provide a brief CV or biographical sketch for the PI and any co-PIs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Budget<\/strong> (attachment) \u2014 Complete this <a href=\"https:\/\/research.wsu.edu\/advancement\/documents\/2024\/01\/grant-budget-form.xlsx\">proposal budget form<\/a> and upload load it using the appropriate field in the application form linked below. Each award will include $10,000 and a one-semester, non-renewable research assistantship to support individual faculty or collaborative teams. The funds will be processed by the PI\u2019s home department, school, or program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--xxsmall\"><strong>The RA will be funded according to the student&#8217;s educational level<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Master&#8217;s student: Step 59<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doctoral student: Step 64<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doctoral student (with passed qualifying exams): Step 69<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the PI wishes to or must fund the the RA at a higher step, the difference in cost can either be covered as part of the $10,000 award budget or using department or grant funds.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-accordion\">\r\n    <h2 id=\"unique-id-1__32956\" class=\"wsu-accordion__title\">\r\n        <button class=\"wsu-accordion__title-button wsu-accordion--toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"unique-id-1__content\">Public Presentation<\/button>\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n    <div id=\"unique-id-1__content\" class=\"wsu-accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"unique-id-1__32956\">\r\n        <div class=\"wsu-accordion__content-inner\">\r\n            \n\n<p>The lead PI will make a 3\u20135 minute public presentation to a general WSU audience and the review panel. The pitch should convey the core ideas, purpose, and expected benefits of the proposed activity <strong>to a non-specialist, multi-disciplinary audience<\/strong>. A short question and answer period will follow. The review panel will select the most promising and compelling project to receive the award\/s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: Based on number of written applications received, applicants may be shortlisted for the public presentation. The Office of Research will contact applicants with further instructions following the application deadline.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The successful projects will be announced on September 25 and recognized during the WSU Research Excellence awards ceremony on November 7.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-accordion\">\r\n    <h2 id=\"unique-id-1__10102\" class=\"wsu-accordion__title\">\r\n        <button class=\"wsu-accordion__title-button wsu-accordion--toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"unique-id-1__content\">Evaluation Criteria<\/button>\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n    <div id=\"unique-id-1__content\" class=\"wsu-accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"unique-id-1__10102\">\r\n        <div class=\"wsu-accordion__content-inner\">\r\n            \n\n<p>A multi-disciplinary faculty review panel will evaluate both the written proposal and public presentation using the below criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Criteria<\/th><th>Weight<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Research question is well-defined.<\/td><td>0.20<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Project is of significance to discipline and\/or has public\/community impact.<\/td><td>0.20<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Project shows innovation, positive collaboration or originality.<\/td><td>0.20<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Plan of execution is reasonable and feasible within the 12-month award period.<\/td><td>0.20<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Project has potential to contribute to RA\u2019s professional and academic development in a meaningful manner.<\/td><td>0.20<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-accordion\">\r\n    <h2 id=\"unique-id-1__23217\" class=\"wsu-accordion__title\">\r\n        <button class=\"wsu-accordion__title-button wsu-accordion--toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"unique-id-1__content\">Award Terms and Conditions<\/button>\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n    <div id=\"unique-id-1__content\" class=\"wsu-accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"unique-id-1__23217\">\r\n        <div class=\"wsu-accordion__content-inner\">\r\n            \n\n<ul>\n<li>The award period is 12 months following transfer of funds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The RA must complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/myresearch.wsu.edu\/Training\/OldMandatoryTraining.aspx?action=viewsite&amp;siteid=1000\">Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)<\/a> training prior to spring semester 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the research activities include human subjects, animals, and\/or biosafety activities, the protocol letter of approval must be submitted to the Office of Research before funds can be released.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assistantships are funded for Spring 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Awardees may be asked to present at a research showcase event following the project&#8217;s completion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A proposal directly related to the seed grant project must be submitted to an external funding source no more than 12 months after the award period ends, or the awardee must show evidence of significant scholarly or creative practice achievement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Awardees must submit a final report to the Office of Research and Graduate School no later than six (6) months after end of the award period. The report must include an assessment of the award\u2019s impact on both the PI\u2019s research program and the individual RA\u2019s academic development in order to allow the university to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. It should document project goals, activities, and outcomes as well as any publications, presentations, exhibitions, media coverage, sales or marketing, projects, papers, proposals\/awards or other accomplishments that resulted from this support.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-accordion\">\r\n    <h2 id=\"unique-id-1__22612\" class=\"wsu-accordion__title\">\r\n        <button class=\"wsu-accordion__title-button wsu-accordion--toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"unique-id-1__content\">Frequently Asked Questions<\/button>\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n    <div id=\"unique-id-1__content\" class=\"wsu-accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"unique-id-1__22612\">\r\n        <div class=\"wsu-accordion__content-inner\">\r\n            \n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How can the funds be used?&nbsp;<\/strong>The $10,000 can be used for almost any expense directly related to the proposed project. However, subawards\/subcontracts (see below) and conference travel are not allowed. Additionally, any requested faculty salary must be well justified, confirming the need for their time to be covered by this grant funding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How detailed does the budget justification need to be?&nbsp;<\/strong>The budget justification portion of the proposal can be a general description of anticipated expenses (e.g. \u201cTravel \u2013 $2,000 for our collaborator at TAMU to travel to WSU for planning activities.\u201d or \u201cSalaries \u2013 $5,000 in summer salaries for the lead PI to coordinate and oversee the planning process.\u201d). It does not have to be detailed in the same manner as an NSF, NIH, or other federal budget proposal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Can the grant include subawards\/subcontracts to external collaborators?&nbsp;<\/strong>No. The money for this grant comes from state funds, which do not allow the establishment of subawards\/subcontracts with outside entities. Grant funds may be used to support a travel stipend or other expenses in support of an external collaboration, but no salary or benefits can be paid to non-WSU employees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Can the graduate student\/RA be PI for this funding competition?&nbsp;<\/strong>No, while the RA must be well integrated into the proposed project, the end goal of this completion is to provide faculty with the resources to advance their research program by pursuing a new area of research. As such, only faculty are allowed to be lead PI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Should the Research Assistantship be accounted for in the budget?&nbsp;<\/strong>Yes, please include the cost of the research assistantship in your budget.
