SUMMARY:Hispanic Heritage Month Panel
DESCRIPTION:Hispanic Heritage Month provides a time to celebrate and honor the research contributions of the Latinx community. Join the Office of Research along with a panel of faculty in an open discussion on the research happening at WSU. Each panel member will present a 5 minute flash talk with a Q&A period to follow. \nThe panel includes: \n\nRobert Bauman\, Professor in the History Department (Tri-Cities). Research interest: The Tri-Cities Latinx Community Oral History Project uses oral histories to explore the experiences of Latinx/Hispanic migrants to and residents of the Tri-Cities area. Those oral histories document the history of Latinx people in the region and focus on issues like migration\, labor\, education\, culture\, family and impacts of COVID-19 on the Latinx/Hispanic population. To date\, we have conducted 15 oral histories. Both the videos and the transcripts of those oral histories will be available on the Hanford History Project website.\nVilma C. Navarro Daniels\, Professor and Interim Director of the School of Language\, Culture\, and Race (Pullman). Current research: Canto Nuevo (New Song)—a Chilean musical genre characterized for its popular roots and its commitment to social change and social justice—as a utopian counter-discourse to the official narratives about national identity created during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. Her research approaches this artistic expression from a variety of perspectives: literary\, cultural\, social\, and political.\nLuz Maria Gordillo\, CAHNRS Assistant Dean for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusive Excellence and Professor of History (Pullman/Vancouver). Research interests are The History of Medicine and Science: Women and Eugenics.\nCesar Haas\, Assistant Professor in the School of Music (Pullman). She works with an amazing team at the WSU LGBTQ+ Center\, where she writes zines with students\, supports programming and equity initiatives\, and facilitates community engagement with the WSU Queer Archives.\nLotus Norton-Wisla\, Interim Head of Manuscripts\, Archives\, and Special Collections (Pullman Campus). Research topics include: QSU Queer Archive\, LGBTQ+ archives\, and collaborations\nTraci Gillig\, Assistant Professor in Strategic Communications (Pullman). Dr. Gillig’s research interests are in the psychological\, social\, and structural factors influencing the mental health of youth from marginalized groups\, particularly LGBTQ+ youth. SUMMARY:Native American Heritage Month Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Native American Heritage Month\, the Office of Research will be hosting a panel discussion with researchers who have made exemplary contribution to the culture\, traditions\, legacy and achievements of the nation’s original inhabitants and their descendants. \nThe panel includes: \n\nRyan Booth (Upper Skagit)\, Assistant Professor\, Department of History. Prof. Booth’s research focuses on the U.S. Indian Scouts\, who served in the U.S. Army from 1866 to 1947. While most scholars have overlooked the Scouts\, they played a pivotal role in the US–Indian Wars. They served in a variety of capacities to help track\, spy\, translate Indigenous languages\, and broker peace. They also proved to be “model” soldiers\, which would impact Native American military servicemembers to the present.\nMichael Holloman (Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation)\, Associate Professor\, Department of Art. Prof. Holloman’s is an artist and scholar with a focus on Native American art history.\nCheryl Ellenwood (Nez Perce and Navajo)\, Assistant Professor\, School of Politics\, Philosophy\, and Public Affairs. Prof. Ellenwood’s current research is “Implementing Indigenous Data Sovereignty practices into research and partnerships with Native Nations through the Indigenous Organizations and Data Lab”\nAngel Sobotta (ta-lalt-lilpt “Sunset”; niimíipuu [Nez Perce])\, Department of Teaching and Learning. Angel Sobotta’s work is focused on Indigenous Knowledge within the language\, stories\, and land.\n\nRSVP
