SUMMARY:Building Academic-Community Partnerships to Promote Health Equity Research and Interventions
DESCRIPTION:Join us!\nWe will discuss progress made by seed grant funded projects from the first community partnership workshop. Join in the discussions among representatives from community organizations and interested faculty on better ways to work together to promote health resilience. Learn about decreasing health risks associated with poverty\, discrimination\, and poor access to healthcare. \nBrief Agenda:\n10:00-10:15 Opening and Welcome\n10:15-12:00 Community Partnership Seed Grant Progress Reports\n12:00-12:30 Lunch\n12:30-1:30 Breakout discussions of major health disparity issues Closing the Gap and Health Promoting Interventions\n1:30-2:00 Whole group discussion of insights \nLost in Translation?\nRemoving barriers to collaboration among communities\, health professionals\, and academic researchers.\nFrom patients to policymakers\, many people have recognized the problem of translating research into practice and the typical disconnect between community needs and academic research interests. How can we improve the translation of research into action to address health disparities?  What do academic researchers need to understand about community needs and the priorities of key stakeholders? How can health care providers\, government agencies\, community groups and researchers best work together to promote evidence-based healthcare in vulnerable populations and improve the social determinants of health? \nHealth Promoting Interventions:\nFrom changing knowledge to changing behavior.\nEducation-based public health campaigns to promote healthy eating\, physical activity\, reduce smoking\, and address other risk factors often fail to produce sustained changes in behavior. What new approaches\, research\, and collaborations are needed to effect population-level improvements in these behaviors and promote the public’s health? Moreover\, what are the key considerations for effective interventions that enable healthy living in disadvantaged populations and increase health equity? \n  \nThe workshop is free and open people who work with health disparity populations\, WSU faculty\, and graduate students. The overall goal is to partnership-building between the university and community-based organizations. Space is limited so please register by September 10th. \nLunch will be provided. \nThis workshop is sponsored by WSU’s Health Equity Research Center(HERC)\, a WSU Grand Challenge funded center. For more information about HERC and the workshop please contact JP Strozewski: jstrozewski@wsu.edu \n  \nPlease RSVP!

SUMMARY:Research Week: Matchmaking - Native American Interests
DESCRIPTION:Native American Interests\nWSU is holds a number of unique partnerships with Native American communities. This matchmaking session will explore some of the opportunities that exist for partnering with researchers already working with these tribes. \n  \nThe goal of this session is to foster valuable interdisciplinary partnerships\, highlight faculty research\, and inspire unique and innovative broader impacts across the university. Presenters and attendees will be inspired by the scope and diversity of research across WSU. \n\nPresenters will pitch their projects to colleagues in a short 3 slide/5-minute overview that highlights the goals of their programs.\nEach session will feature 12 different presentations\, providing diverse possibilities for potential collaborations.\n\nPlease RSVP to let us know you’ll be there! \n\n
