Derek Brown

Derek Brown, research operations manager in the Office of Research, received the 2023 Administrative Professional Contribution Award. The award was presented by WSU’s Administrative Professional Advisory Council (APAC) during their monthly meeting in April.

The award recognizes administrative professionals who have made exceptional contributions to WSU and their respective areas or units. Six people were selected for the award, receiving $1,000 each as part of the honor.

Brown was selected for his technical skills and knowledge of the Office of Research and his friendly approach to finding a solution to research support and operations challenges. Additionally, colleagues recommending him for the award highlighted his positive attitude, good humor, and positive working relationships.

“Derek holds a wealth of knowledge in the Office of Research. He is best known to me for all his process improvements in the Office of Research Support and Operations and how he takes action to address problems where needed quickly. He is committed to help the overall picture to serve Washington State University. His dedication to his role and the support that he gives to his unit and our research community is outstanding,” said Michelle Hendrickson, research services manager in College in the Arts and Sciences, in her nomination letter.

APAC provides institutional-level advocacy in support of administrative professional (AP) staff by serving as a liaison with WSU senior administration, communicating matters of interest to APs, soliciting feedback, helping make WSU a great place to work, and providing professional development opportunities.
