Promoting Social Justice
for Public Education

Dr. Groves Price critically examines the impact of educational policy and practices on the lives of underserved communities. Her research is centered on equity in education and the need to develop culturally responsive policies, pedagogies, and school environments for the achievement and success of all students. She is currently investigating the impact of the arts in garnering critical thinking skills and in developing academic rigor, enthusiasm for learning, and cross cultural dialogue in public schools. Central to this research project is capturing the voices of America’s youth in rural and urban contexts as they express their identities, experiences, and visions for school improvement via intellectual and artistic mediums.
Dr. Groves Price is also working in partnership with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe to foster resiliency, leadership skills, and voice for Indian youth. She develops and delivers culturally responsive curriculum materials and seminars to these youth annually, and works with the tribal community to improve their experiences in public education. Her recent research includes case studies of several school reform models including Charter Schools, Alternative Schools, Arts-Based schools, and Comer Schools to understand the experiences of schools, teachers, administrators, students, and communities as they work toward school improvement and social justice.
Additionally, Dr. Groves Price has researched the impact of national and state education policies on the teaching profession, teacher education programs, and K-12 schools. This research, conducted in five states, seeks to connect educational theory, policy, and practice for better coherence across constituencies and improved understanding of policy environments that support effective teaching and learning. As the coordinator of the Elementary Education Certification Program, Dr. Groves Price and her colleagues work to prepare teachers to be transformative, caring, and competent educators for a diverse society. Her research seeks to bridge disconnects between policymakers, practitioners, theorists, and students through a focus on equity and social justice.
